Patient Participation Group

A few years ago the government encouraged GP surgeries to start “patient participation groups”. This was designed to allow patients to start to influence how a GP surgery works and the services it provides.

Sounds interesting?? Read on….

Here at Whitnash, our group has been going strong over the last few years. As GPs we have really benefitted from the input this group gives and their help and support within the community. We meet every 2-3 months for about 1½ hours. There is an agenda that is circulated beforehand. Our practice manager attends all meetings, along with one of the GP partners.

If you would like to attend a meeting please contact:

We would still welcome more patients to the group.

There are some guidelines that were put in place when the group started – the main one being that it is not a forum for personal complaints or grievances and no medical advice will be given.

The group have been incredibly dedicated and have encouraged us to take various actions. We hosted an open evening for teenagers and went to a careers fair at Warwick School to help reach out to this part of a practice population that cannot be easily engaged in other ways. One of our patient group members hosted a dementia topic evening which was very successful and resulted in much more information being made available to support patients and their carers who are affected by dementia.

There is also a South Warwickshire wide patient group made up from representatives from each individual group and from the voluntary sector. This group is designed to feed into the higher level, the CCG (clinical commissioning group). The CCG makes the decisions on what services are commissioned locally at Warwick Hospital and from other providers.

Virtual Group

We also have a “virtual ” group for those who cannot commit to the meetings who we can email for opinions and with information. If you are interested in joining this please contact the Practice Manager.

We aim to gather around a hundred patients from as broad a spectrum as possible to get a truly representative sample. We need young people, workers, retirees, people with long term conditions and people from non-British ethnic groups.
